Hybrid Setup of the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, also known as a PHEV. The basic layout of any PHEV is an internal combustion engine, at least one electric motor, and a battery pack that receives most of its charge from an external power source. For the 4xe models, Jeep uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 cylinder engine, an engine-mounted electric motor, a transmission-mounted electric motor, and a 400-volt lithium-ion EV battery pack. In addition to the gas equivalent of 56 miles per gallon, the Grand Cherokee 4xe unleashes 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered to the wheels by a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. Jeep gave 4xe its name by combining the phrases “four-by-four” and “electric,” making 4xe stand for four-by-electric. This is because all 4xe models come standard with 4x4 and electric power. The Grand Cherokee 4xe comes standard with Quadra-Trac I full-time 4x4, sending 48% of torque to the front axle and 52% to the rear axle. Quadra-Trac II is available for the Grand Cherokee 4xe, offering superior traction by sending torque to the axle with the most traction with a two-speed transfer case with high and low modes. Lastly, Quadra-Drive II is standard for the Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve. This system acts similarly to Quadra-Trac II but uses an electronic limited-slip rear differential to provide even better traction.
