The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer were introduced in 1963 and 1984, respectively, and quickly became known as the top luxury SUVs on the market. With loads of industry-first features and combinations, the Wagoneer was ahead of its time and gained popularity because of it. After their discontinuation in 1991, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer returned for the 2022 model year as a luxury SUV extension of the Jeep Brand. While the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer share a lot of features, they are also very different in many ways. Continue reading below to learn more about the difference between the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer to help decide which is right for you!

Wagoneer Exterior Design

The Wagoneer’s exterior design draws on Jeep’s rich history, featuring vintage Jeep design notes flawlessly blended with a modern SUV appearance. Although it is separate from the Jeep lineup, Wagoneer still wears the iconic seven-slot grille. The grille is flanked by slim headlight housings with crisp LED lights inside. From the side, Wagoneer has a distinct A-line to give a silhouetted side profile, while a tapered roofline improves aerodynamics and gives it a streamlined look. Other exterior features include power-adjustable/heated side mirrors, 20-inch alloy wheels, a hands-free liftgate, LED taillights, and more.

  • Hands-Free Power Liftgate

Grand Wagoneer Exterior Design

The Grand Wagoneer takes the Wagoneer and makes it more, well, grand. It is instantly distinguished with ‘Grand Wagoneer’ badging instead of ‘Wagoneer’ on the lower door panels, hood, and trunk lid. Looking at the Grand Wagoneer from the front, you’ll notice the grille is painted silver, distinguishing itself from the Wagoneer’s black grille. The Grand Wagoneer also features 22-inch alloy wheels, a Gloss Black painted roof, a tri-pane sunroof, and automatically-folding side mirrors to set itself apart from the Wagoneer.

The Wagoneer’s cabin design is also a seamless blend of Jeep’s American craftsmanship heritage and modern features. Nappa leather upholstery wraps the seats, which provide room for eight occupants with two front bucket seats and second and third-row three-seat benches. In front, the seats are heated and cooled and can be adjusted in eight directions. Instead of the three-spoke steering wheels we’ve become used to, the Wagoneer nods at the original model by the same name with a two-spoke steering wheel. However, the new one is wrapped in leather and features audio and cruise controls. Behind the steering wheel, you’ll notice a crisp digital gauge cluster spanning 10.25 inches that can be fully customized to suit your preferences. Meanwhile, the center stack features a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen running Uconnect 5, featuring cordless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, TomTom navigation, over-the-air updates, and more. Below the touchscreen are physical buttons for the settings of the dual-zone automatic climate control system.

The Grand Wagoneer swaps out the second-row bench for two captain’s chairs with a center console with two cupholders and a storage bin. In front, the seats are upgraded with massagers and 14-way power adjustments. Behind the steering wheel, the digital gauge cluster is enlarged, spanning 12.3 inches. Similarly, the 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen of the Wagoneer is swapped out for a horizontal 12-inch touchscreen. Below the infotainment touchscreen, the Wagoneer’s physical climate control buttons are replaced by a 10.25-inch touchscreen for all of your climate control needs. Additionally, while the Wagoneer features ten Alpine speakers, the Grand Wagoneer features a 19-speaker sound system created exclusively for the model by McIntosh Labs. The Grand Wagoneer’s climate control is upgraded to four zones; left front, right front, left rear, and right rear. The center console between the second-row seats also features a 10.25-inch climate control touchscreen, similar to the one between the front seats.

Wagoneer Engine and Drivetrain

When the Wagoneer rolled out in 2022, it had a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine underneath the hood. This provided drivers with 392 horsepower, 404 lb-ft of torque, and up to a 10,000-pound towing capacity. This engine is still standard equipment for the 2023 Wagoneer Series I. However, stepping up to the Series II trim or higher, you’ll get the all-new Hurricane engine which provides 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque. This boost in power comes from a twin-turbocharged 3.0L inline six-cylinder engine. While providing enhanced power, Wagoneers with the Hurricane engine experience greater fuel efficiency compared to the larger V8 engine. Both Wagoneer engines come linked to a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission. The transmission sends power to the rear wheels as standard equipment. However, the Wagoneer is available with either Quadra-Trac I 4x4, Quadra-Trac II 4x4, or Quadra-Drive II 4x4.

The Grand Wagoneer was introduced with a 6.4L HEMI V8 in 2022, which is still standard equipment for the entry-level Grand Wagoneer trim. The 6.4L V8 engine provides 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. However, the rest of the trim level lineup features more power and increased fuel efficiency with the high-output Hurricane engine, which boosts the power even further, pumping out 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the Grand Wagoneer comes equipped with Quadra-Drive II 4x4. This system continuously reads road conditions and distributes torque to the axle with the most traction to stay in control. It also features an electronic limited-slip rear differential to send up to 100% of available power to a single rear wheel.

  • Eight-Speed Automatic Transmission
  • Quadra-Drive II 4x4
