Jeep revealed its 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain in 2021 for the Wrangler. Following suit, the Grand Cherokee received the 4xe treatment in the 2022 model year! Now, Jeep has revealed its plans to expand the 4xe lineup and unveiled their first-ever all-electric models! The Jeep 4xe PHEV system was just the first step towards Jeep’s All-Electric Freedom goal. Please keep reading below to learn more about Jeep’s current and future electric vehicle plans!
Jeep's Electric Plans
As of now, Jeep has two models with available electric power; the Wrangler 4xe and the Grand Cherokee 4xe. The 4xe powertrain mates Jeep’s turbocharged 2.0-L I-4 engine to a pair of electric motors that are mated to a lithium-ion EV battery. In addition to 470 lb-ft of torque and 375 horsepower, this gives the Grand Cherokee 4xe the gas equivalent of 56 MPG and the Wrangler 4xe 49 MPG gas equivalent. Jeep has laid out a plan to offer the 4xe system to the entire Jeep lineup by 2025. Furthermore, the brand has revealed plans to provide two all-electric models by the 2024 model year, the Jeep Recon and the Wagoneer S. Read on to discover the first two battery-electric vehicles from Jeep!
Jeep Recon EV
The first all-electric model Jeep revealed was the Recon. While propelling the brand into the future, the Jeep Recon holds the brand’s heritage closely, donning the emblematic seven-slot grille and adopting the removable top and doors from the Wrangler for some open-air freedom. The Recon is well-equipped for on and off-road adventures with standard 4x4, e-locker axle technology, underbody skid plates, tow hooks, Selec-Terrain traction management, and all-terrain tires. Being a battery-electric vehicle, the Recon’s power is sent to all four wheels as soon as you hit the pedal without any delay. This is because instead of waiting for the combustion process like you have to with a gas-powered engine, electric vehicle powertrains are much simpler, giving it the ability to send full torque, the power that drives the wheels, instantly. In addition to increased acceleration and performance, this provides superior control while crawling on trails at low speeds. Additionally, for those questioning the Recon’s off-roading abilities, Jeep has stated that it is capable of overcoming the daunting Rubicon Trail and still make it back to town on the remaining battery power. While production of the Jeep Recon will begin in 2024, pre-ordering will open in the early months of 2023.
Wagoneer S EV
In the 2022 model year, the Wagoneer nameplate was resurrected as Jeep’s luxury SUV extension. The same day that the Jeep Recon was revealed, a new battery-electric Wagoneer was revealed as well. The Wagoneer S, pictured above, uses all-electric power to give drivers an estimated 0-60 time of just 3.5 seconds with up to 600 horsepower. Furthermore, engineers of the Wagoneer S are targeting a 400-mile driving range on a full charge. The design of the Wagoneer S can be described in many words, classic yet modern and elegant yet bold. While these words are polar opposites, designers brought them together beautifully with sharp lines, elegant curves, a swooping roof line, an LED-illuminated seven-slot grille, a rear wing spoiler, and a panoramic glass roof. The ordering and production timeframes for the Wagoneer S is the same as the Jeep Recon, with ordering opening up in early 2023 and production beginning in 2024.
