Although electric vehicles don’t use gasoline, refueling is still a requirement. This is done by plugging the vehicle into an external power source via a charging cable. As more and more electric models show up on the market, more EV charging stations show up along the roads. Whether you’re shopping for a new EV or you’re a new EV owner, it’s important to increase your knowledge about EV charging. With the introduction of the Jeep 4xe plug-in hybrid models, we want our customers to have the essential charging knowledge here at Haasz Auto Mall of Ravenna. So please continue reading below to learn more!
What Kinds of Electric Vehicle Chargers Are Available?
Level 1 chargers are the standard EV chargers that come with the purchase of a new EV. Plugged into a standard 120-volt household outlet, Level 1 chargers provide a plug-in hybrid with a full charge in six to twelve hours. Meanwhile, it can take a Level 1 charger up to 24 hours to provide an all-electric vehicle with a full charge. This is because the size of the battery plays a big part in determining charging times, and all-electric car batteries are larger than those of plug-in hybrids. With a Level 1 charger, most EV and PHEV owners choose to leave their vehicles plugged in overnight to wake up to a full charge. Next is the Level 2 EV charging station. While Level 1 cables draw power from a 120-volt outlet, Level 2 chargers are professionally installed using a 240-volt outlet. PHEV owners enjoy charging times of just one and a half to four hours, while Level 2 chargers give all-electric vehicles a full charge in four to nine hours.
Public EV Chargers
While most public charging stations use Level 2 chargers, some are implementing Level 3 chargers, also known as DC Fast Chargers. As of now, only battery electric vehicles are compatible with Level 3 chargers. A Level 3 charger will give a BEV a charge of 80% in approximately fifteen to twenty minutes. This allows BEV drivers to spend more time driving and less time at the charging station. There are many EV charging stations in the Ravenna area, including a SemaConnect station on North Mantua Street in nearby Kent, a Charge Point station on East Erie Street in Kent, another Charge Point station on Kenmore Blvd in Akron, and many more.
Public EV Charging Station Etiquette
There are a few tips to keep in mind when visiting an EV charging station. First and foremost, only use the charging station spots for charging your car. These are not VIP parking spots for EV owners, they are for charging only. Be considerate of fellow EV owners, and only park at a charging station if you’re charging. Next, be sure to find the right plug. For example, if you own a PHEV, make sure not to use a Level 3 charger if you come across one, as PHEVs are not compatible for Level 3 charging yet. The last thing to remember is a bit of an unspoken rule but should be mentioned anyways. Be respectful to other EV owners, and never unplug another EV while it is charging. It is impossible to know the state of another vehicle’s charge or how much power they’ll need to get to their destination. EV owners are members of a community, and the Golden Rule is essential to a happy community.
